Now, Sinners’s Smoke (Michael B. Jordan) will be seen in Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming action thriller Miami Vice ’85, alongside Austin Butler, who is known for his breakthrough, award-winning performance in Elvis (2022).
Universal Pictures is bringing a fresh take on Miami Vice, with Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler stepping into the roles of the legendary detective duo, Tubbs and Crockett.
Kosinski’s fresh take, according to Deadline, reimagines the iconic series by plunging into the vibrant, neon-drenched Miami of the ’80s, with creative cues lifted from the first season’s pilot. Shot for IMAX, the movie is set to hit theaters on August 6, 2027.
Dan Gilroy handles the screenplay, building on drafts by Eric Warren Singer. Original series creators Anthony Yerkovich and Michael Mann return as executive producers. Filming starts summer 2026.
Some sources suggest that Tom Cruise may play the antagonist in the film. While this remains unconfirmed, the rumor has gained attention, especially given the strong track record of the dynamic duo Joseph Kosinski and Tom Cruise, who previously delivered standout films like Oblivion and Top Gun: Maverick.
If Tom Cruise takes on a villainous role, it wouldn’t be unfamiliar territory—he has delivered memorable antagonistic performances in films like Collateral, Interview with the Vampire, and Taps.
With F1—a Brad Pitt-led juggernaut grossing over $600 million—behind him, Kosinski is preparing to tackle an Apple-backed UFO whistleblower thriller.
