Out Today: Alex Cox’s Controversial New Western ‘Dead Souls’

Alex Cox Dead Souls (2025)

Western drama Dead Soul, directed by Alex Cox with writing contributions from Gianni Garko and inspired by the poems of Nikolay Gogol (Nikolai Vasil’evich Gogol), releases today, June 20, following its mixed reception at the Rotterdam Film Festival.

The cast is led by Alex Cox, who plays Steindler. Zander Schloss joins him as Borracho and Merritt Crocker as Crocker. The ensemble also features Maria Robles as Nuria, Eric Schumacher as Mayor Avery Senator, and Brendan Guy Murphy as Sheriff Purdy, adding more color to the film’s world.

The film follows Strindler, played by Alex Cox, who arrives in an Arizona town in 1890—the year of the U.S. census—offering names of dead Mexican laborers in exchange for money. This scheme soon unleashes chaos across the community.

During the 1980s, English filmmaker Alex Cox emerged as a defining voice of punk cinema, known for anarchic wit and political bite. He directed cult classics like Repo Man (1984) and Sid and Nancy (1986), the latter launching Gary Oldman’s career, and contributed to the early screenplay of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998).

Upcoming on the horizon: Alex Cox takes the reins as writer and director of Buffalo 8’s action‑adventure Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer

Produced by Merritt Crocker and Guillermo de Oliveira as producers, and executive producers Tod Davies, Abby Harris, David Nedrow, and Etienne Thomas.
