
Universal Pictures has officially greenlit a Donkey‑centered film from DreamWorks Animation, marking a bold expansion of the beloved Shrek universe.
During the Beverly Hills Cop press tour, Eddie Murphy let slip that Donkey is getting his own big‑screen adventure from DreamWorks Animation, arriving June 30, 2028.
Directed by Charlie Bean, the movie shows how long before he cracked jokes at Shrek’s side, Donkey had his own tale—this animated spinoff uncovers how he grew into the waffle‑loving friend fans cherish.
Co-directing duties are split between Charlie Bean, best known for The Lego Batman Movie, and Matt Flynn, whose credits span The Wild Robot and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. produced by Rebecca Huntley (Kung Fu Panda 4 and The Bad Guys).
