For the Palme d’Or, 21 movies are confirmed to compete in the 79th Cannes Film Festival, held from May 12 to 23.
Ira Sachs’s “The Man I Love” marks the first time in 15 years that only one American film is competing for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. You can also spot familiar names like Pawel Pawlikowski, Andrey Zvyagintsev, Pedro Almodóvar, Cristian Mungiu, Na Hong-jin, Hirokazu Koreeda, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, László Nemes, Lukas Dhont, and Asghar Farhadi, all present in the main competition.
Out of 20 films posted by WOR, 17 have been selected. The missing titles are James Gray’s “Paper Tiger,” Werner Herzog’s “Bucking Fastard,” and Lila Avilés’s “Cábula.” One or more of these could still join the lineup in the coming weeks, but for now, they are not included.
Speaking about James Gray’s “Paper Tiger,” festival chief Thierry Frémaux said he has already seen the film and hopes it will be added later. He even compared it to Gray’s first film, “Little Odessa.” It seems likely the film could join the lineup soon. Paper Tiger is an upcoming American crime drama film written and directed by James Gray, starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, and Miles Teller.
France Télévisions, Brut, and the Festival de Cannes co-produce TV Festival de Cannes, which covers the red
carpet, press conferences, photo calls, and key events. Screenings will take place in French and English at the Palais, on outdoor screens, and in hotels along the Croisette.
