Laura Adler Dies: Emmy-Nominated ‘American Dreams’ Casting Director Was 65

On Thursday in Los Angeles, Laura Adler, a former Casting Society administrator and casting director, died at 65 following a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late actor and director Jerry Adler.

Her family includes sisters Alisa Adler, a talent agent at Paradigm; Emily Adler, a writer; Amy Adler; and her nephew, Joe Adler.

“Born and raised in New York, Laura started her career in the early 1980s as a technician on The Pee-wee Herman Show and moved into casting in 1989.

Adler has worked on a wide range of projects across film and television. Her role on American Dreams earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Casting in a Drama Series in 2003, and her other notable projects include Better Off Ted, Dream On, My Boys, and The Goode Family.

She was a key leader in the Casting Society, helping secure vital benefits for casting professionals, serving as an administrator from 2014 to 2024, and earning recognition for her casting work and Rosalie Joseph Humanitarian Award contributions, including a posthumous award in 2026. On Feb. 26 in Los Angeles, the award will be showcased at the 41st Annual Artios Awards.

In the early stages of her career, she worked alongside renowned casting directors Ted Hann, Mark Saks, and Barbara Claman. She was the daughter of the late actor and director Jerry Adler.
