Netflix is getting ready to release a new documentary about one of comedy’s most loved stars. The film is called Marty, Life Is Short, and it will premiere on May 12. The documentary will focus on the life and career of actor and comedian Martin Short.
After earning an Emmy on Canada’s SCTV, Marty was recruited by SNL, where his eccentric characters—Ed Grimley, lawyer Nathan Thurm, and “legendary songwriter” Irving Cohen—made him a breakout star.
He received a Tony, a Theatre World Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Award for Little Me, and is further known for productions like Neil Simon’s The Goodbye Girl(musical) and Fame Becomes Me. Short stepped in as host of ABC’s Match Game in 2025, with the latest season currently available on Hulu.
Lawrence Kasdan, director of Body Heat, The Big Chill, and The Bodyguard, helms the documentary, produced by Sara Bernstein, Meredith Kaulfers, Christopher St. John, Justin Wilkes, Kasdan, and Blair Foster, with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard executive producing via Imagine Documentaries.

Among his notable specials is Netflix’s An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life, co-hosted with Steve Martin, which picked up four Emmy nominations in 2018.
