Shrek 5 Movie: Zendaya Joins Ensemble Cast, Trailer & Plot!

Shrek 5

“Shrek 5” is finally on the way—arriving a full 17 years after the last chapter, 2010’s Shrek Forever After. This new adventure is being directed by Brad Ableson, Walt Dohrn, and Conrad Vernon, with a script from Michael McCullers and Christopher Meledandri, inspired by the beloved characters created by William Steig.

The Shrek franchise carries a remarkable legacy, beginning with Shrek (2001), which won the 2002 Oscar for Best Animated Feature for producer Aron Warner, and earned Terry Rossio the BAFTA Film Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, along with the 2001 BAFTA Children’s Award for Best Feature Film.

Shrek 2 (2004) followed with two Oscar nominations, while Shrek the Third received a BAFTA nomination, before the saga concluded with Shrek Forever After in 2010.

The last film in the franchise, Shrek Forever After, hit theaters in 2010 under the direction of Mike Mitchell, with a screenplay by Josh Klausner and Darren Lemke, based on William Steig’s characters. Backed by an estimated $165 million budget, the movie went on to gross an impressive $752.6 million worldwide, despite a modest 58% critics’ score on the Tomatometer. The film brought back its beloved stars—Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy—reprising their iconic roles.

Emmy and Golden Globe winner Zendaya joins Shrek 5 as the daughter of Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers). The returning cast features Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, Julie Andrews as the Queen, John Cleese as the King, and Eddie Murphy reprising his beloved role as Donkey.

Other cast members, Shrek and Fiona’s sons, are voiced by Skyler Gisondo (Booksmart, The Righteous Gemstones) as Farkle and the Saturday Night Live breakout star Marcello Hernández as Fergus. Notably, Antonio Banderas was absent from the official announcement.

The road to Shrek 5 has been a bit of a rollercoaster. First announced for July 1, 2026, the film was later moved to December 23, 2026, only to be pushed back yet again to June 30, 2027. It’s been a long wait, but fans know that when Shrek finally stomps back onto the big screen, it’ll be worth it.

DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures are bringing the ogre back—Shrek 5 is finally happening, landing 17 years after fans last saw the crew in 2010’s Shrek Forever After. The big question is whether this fairy‑tale favorite still has some magic left. Honestly, with Shrek and friends, there’s always room for one more laugh.
