Lin-Manuel Miranda to Direct ‘Octet’ Movie: New Musical Film Details

Lin-Manuel Miranda

Lin-Manuel Miranda will take the director’s chair for a film version of Dave Malloy’s a cappella musical Octet, announced on April 2, 2026. The story focuses on digital dependency and internet addiction. It will be his second film as a director, following Tick, Tick… Boom! in 2021.

Octet spotlights eight people confronting their digital compulsions, channeling every emotion through the vibrant force of live voices. Sparkling with wit, layered harmonies, and soaring solos, it celebrates the search for connection, the promise of redemption, and the joy of being wholly present together.

Directed by Annie Tippe, Octet premiered off-Broadway at New York City’s Signature Theatre on May 19, 2019, running through June 30, and during its brief engagement earned the Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, and Obie Awards.

Dave Malloy, who penned and composed Octet, is now reimagining the work for film, serving as both adapter and executive producer.

Producers are Julie Oh, John Skidmore, and Luis A. Miranda, Jr. Executive producers include Johnny Holland, Owen Panettieri, and Diana DiMenna. The film is also financed and executive produced by Sander Jacobs, Caren Jacobs, TodayTix Group, Jeffrey Seller, Teresa Tsai, and John Gore.

“I haven’t stopped thinking about ‘Octet’ since I saw Annie Tippe’s premiere production in November of 2019. Dave Malloy’s score is versatile, brilliant, and grows more relevant with each passing year. It won’t leave me alone, so here we are. “Miranda said.

Writer and composer Malloy said, “I am over the moon that Lin-Manuel is turning ‘Octet’ into a movie! I was utterly gobsmacked by his work on ‘tTck, Tick… Boom!, and feel so honored to have such a beacon of the musical theater world bring this piece into a new life. As a brilliant storyteller, fellow internet junkie, and dear friend, I know he’s going to make something amazing. And our cast is completely ridiculous.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda is an award-winning songwriter, actor, director, and producer, recognized with Pulitzer, Grammy, Emmy, and Tony honors. He rose to global fame as the creator and original lead of the Broadway hits Hamilton and In the Heights.
