Josephine Baker, born on June 3, 1906, in St. Louis, was a world-famous entertainer who also became a heroic spy for the French Resistance during World War II, using her international fame to gather and secretly transport intelligence. She later made history as the first American-born woman to be inducted into the Panthéon, one of France’s highest national honors.
FKA twigs made her acting debut in the 2019 American drama film Honey Boy, directed by Alma Har’el, where she played the role of Shy Girl in the semi-autobiographical story. She later appeared in films including The Crow, The Carpenter’s Son, and Mother Mary.
Before transitioning into acting, FKA twigs established herself as one of music’s most innovative artists, blending avant-garde electronic and R&B sounds. Some of her most popular songs include Two Weeks, Cellophane, Tears in the Club, and Eusexua, with “Eusexua” winning the 2025 Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
Maïmouna Doucouré made her directorial breakthrough with the short film Maman(s), inspired by her own childhood experiences growing up around polygamy. The film earned more than 60 international awards, including the César Award for Best Short Film and the Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Following the success of Maman(s), Doucouré went on to write and direct films such as Cuties, the controversial Netflix release, and Hawa(2022).
